The Department, formally established in 2005, started out as a project in 1999 launched by the Confederation of Danish Industries (DI), the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), and the Danish Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), in cooperation with the Danish government. Research is conducted by Department staff and researchers from the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), Denmark’s national human rights institute.

Below are some of the partners that we have engaged with thoughout the years.

In 2003, the Danish Institute for Human Rights and the UN Global Compact signed a Memorandum of Understanding identifying major areas of cooperation.

The Global Compact recognises the educational and practical value of the tools developed by the Human Rights and Business Department, and states its support for the Department's efforts to 'further the business sector's capacity to understand and implement the human rights principles enshrined in the Global Compact and other international agreements'.
